Carpenter's contribution to athletics came after his days at Roanoke College - in his hometown of Covington, Va.
Coached baseball at Allegheny County High School for 11 years as his teams won nine district championships, one regional championship, and a state runner-up finish.
Carpenter was one of the first two coaches in the state to coach in the Virginia High School League All-Star High School baseball game.
Was also a scout for the Kansas City Royals of the American League and was President of the Virginia Athletic Association.
