The Basics - Game 1 

Score: Emory 5, Roanoke 4
Records: Roanoke 1-3 | Emory 6-2
Location: Atlanta, Ga.  

The Lead: Emory used a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to slip past Roanoke 5-4 in the opener of the doubleheader.

How it Happened

  • Roanoke got on the board in the top of the second inning when Will Merriken and Matt Wojciechowski had back-to-back singles before Cody Shell walked to load the bases. Sam Watson then grounded out, plating Merriken and making it a 1-0 game.
  • Gavin Kandrick opened the third inning for the Maroons with a single. He would move to second on a wild pitch with one out and score on a Merriken single.
  • Later that same inning, Shell delivered a two out single to score Jack Howard and make it a 3-0 game.
  • The Eagles would score single runs in the third and fifth innings to make it a 3-2 game heading into the bottom of the seventh inning where Jackson Grayson and Zeke Diamond each had RBI singles to put Emory on top 4-3.
  • Shell responded for the Maroons in the next half inning when he homered to tie the game at 4-4.
  • In the bottom of the ninth inning, Grayson and Michael Edelman had back-to-back singles for Emory with one out. Grayson would advance on a fielder's choice and score the game-winning run on a hit by Diamond.
  • Jack Brodsky (4-0) picked up the win after coming into the game in the ninth inning. Ethan Delahunty (0-1) took the loss for RC.
  • Shell, Merriken, Kandrick and Will Salva each had two hits for RC.


The Basics - Game 2

Score: Roanoke 3, Emory 1
Records: Roanoke 2-3 | Emory 6-3
Location: Atlanta, Ga.  

The Lead: Roanoke held Emory to just three hits to earn a split of the doubleheader with a 3-1 win.

How it Happened

  • With two outs in the second inning, Shell walked, stole second and came home to score and make it 1-0 on a Hunter Andrews single.
  • In the Roanoke third inning, Will Smith and Scott Ellis led off with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Kandrick would then single to load the bases. Salva would plate Smith with a sacrifice fly to double the RC lead.
  • Emory made it 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Maroons would get that run right back on a Kandrick RBI double that scored Ellis to put RC on top 3-1.
  • Four Maroon pitchers combined to surrender just three hits to the Eagles. Casey Rosenthal (1-0) pitched a perfect 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the win, while Kevin Ledford (1) picked up the save after pitching the final three innings and without giving up a hit.
  • Kandrick and Smith each finished with three hits for RC in the win.

Up Next: Roanoke will face Birmingham Southern for a 6:00 p.m. game on Monday.
