Maroons Fall to No. 3 Shenandoah in Game 2 of ODAC Championship Weekend

The Lead: The No. 3 seed Roanoke baseball team dropped their opening game of the 2023 ODAC Baseball Championship weekend to No. 2 seed Shenandoah, 11-2, at Pitt Field on the campus of the University of Richmond Thursday afternoon.

Highlights:

  • After two scoreless innings, the Hornets took advantage of three Maroon errors in the bottom of the third to push five runs across the plate. SU would score those runs on five hits to take a 5-0 after three. 
  • With one out in the bottom of the fifth, SU added to their lead with a solo home run and three batters later added a second of the inning for a 7-0 lead after five.
  • The Maroons got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Jacob Bonzon drew a walk. Mason Staz followed up with a double to left field that Bonzon was able to score off of. Jonny Wall hit a single to deep right that allowed Staz to finish touching all four bases as the Maroons cut into the Hornet lead 7-2. 
  • Shenandoah answered back with three runs of their own in the seventh and one more in the eighth and held on for the 11-2 win in Game 2 of the Championship weekend.
  • Wall finished the game going 3-for-5 with one RBI.

Up next: Roanoke will next play an elimination game against No. 4 Randolph-Macon tomorrow, Friday, May 12 at 10 a.m. The Yellow Jackets dropped their first game of the weekend to top-seeded Lynchburg, 3-0, in the first game of the day on Thursday.
