The Lead: Field Hockey traveled to Bridgewater for their first road game of the 2020-21 season. After notching a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) home wins to start the season, the Maroons looked to get the campaign off to a 3-0 start against the Eagles. RC took a 1-0 lead into the fourth quarter, but a late Bridgewater goal would tie the score. The home team would score the game winner on a penalty corner with 4:34 remaining in the first overtime.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke would control most of the first half in the Eagles zone, enjoying a 13-0 shot advantage in the first quarter.
  • The game would remain scoreless for the first 25 minutes of action. With just over four minutes until the half, Claudia Roncone would break the tie off an assist by Emilee Wooten and take a 1-0 edge into the half.
  • The third quarter would produce only a pair of shots. Wooten's shot was saved by the Eagles goalie while the shot attempted by Lauren Heffron was off the mark.
  • With 10 minutes on the clock, Bridgewater would get their first scoring opportunity of the contest. They were awarded a penalty corner and the ball would end up at the left post. The Bridgewater attacker would take the pass and tie the game at one apiece.
  • Roanoke would be awarded a pair of penalty corners in the final minute of play but were unable to convert as the game headed into overtime.
  • With 7:50 to go in the first overtime period, Wooten got loose and had a one on one chance with the goalie but the shot was saved as play would continue.
  • With less than five minutes on the clock, Bridgewater would get another penalty corner. As on their previous chance, the Eagles sent the ball into the zone and scored the game winner off the rebound.
  • Wooten had 11 shots on goal with Roncone sending five shots on target. Hannah Roerden recorded one save.

Up next: Roanoke will return home for a matchup with Eastern Mennonite on Friday afternoon. The game with the Royals is scheduled to start at 4:00pm.
