  • The Short Story: The Roanoke men's basketball team hit the road as they looked to remain unbeaten in ODAC play. A quick start led to a large lead midway through the first half before the Maroons held on for the 79-73 win over the Washington and Lee Generals on Wednesday evening in Lexington.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Maroons jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on WLU at 18:12 in the first half and pushed it to 13-2 thanks to a pair of free throws by Zach Rosenthal at 13:55. A floating jump shot by Kasey Draper pushed the lead up to 15 at 10:52 at 23-8. The two teams began to trade baskets with the Maroons having their largest lead at 32-14 at 7:20 on a Tripp Greene three-pointer.
  • A quick run by the Generals pulled them within five at 40-35 with just 57 seconds left in the half. Joshua McClary would put the lead back up to eight with seven seconds before the break at 45-37.
  • It was nearly a minute and a half into the second period before the next point was scored on a Marcus Morgan layup putting Roanoke up by double-digits again. Two quick baskets by the Generals pulled them within six, but the Maroons answered back with four of their own to put the lead back at 10. A hook shot by Greene with 14:26 put the lead up to 12.
  • Small runs by the Generals chipped away the Maroon lead as the home team pulled within four at 62-58 with 6:54 left in the game. However, Roanoke answered back and went up by eight at 3:32 and 2:19 on separate occasions. With the Maroons leading by five with less than a minute left in the contest, the Generals began to foul in an attempt to get rebounds off of missed free throws, but Roanoke used the opportunities to go up by 10 with 27 seconds left. Time ran out on WLU as the Maroons held on for the six-point win, 79-73.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Draper and Justin Kuthan led all scorers with game-highs 18 points and were two of four in double figures. Rosenthal finished with 13 points and McClary finished with 11 for Roanoke.
  • As a team, the Maroons shot 48.1 from the field and 61.8% from the free-throw line.
  • Roanoke led WLU in free throws made (21-17), rebounds (42-33), points in the paint (32-18), and bench points (44-12).
