The Basics
Score: Roanoke 11 | Cortland 15
Records: Maroons 4-3 / 1-0 ODAC | Red Dragons 2-3
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke looked to build on their 4-0 home start when they welcomed Cortland to Kerr Stadium for a Tuesday afternoon matchup. The Red Dragons led early but the Maroons tied it up at 7-7 just minutes into the second half. However, Cortland scored three straight to regain the lead. Roanoke was down 15-8 with five minutes remaining. Three consecutive Roanoke scores would close the gap; however, time ran out on the Maroon rally as they fell, 15-11.

How it Happened:

  • Ethan Caldwell scored with 44 seconds left in the first quarter, and Roanoke would fall behind 4-1 after the first 15 minutes of play.
  • During the second frame, Luke Kammerman scored four times to keep Roanoke to within striking distance, 7-6, at the half.
  • Wyatt Whitlow scored off a feed from Caldwell and the game was tied at 7-7 with 11:09 left in the third period.
  • Cortland went on a 5-1 run to close the quarter and take a 12-8 lead into the finale.
  • After the Red Dragons ran their lead to 15-8, Roanoke had just under seven minutes remaining to try to mount a rally. George Gilbert found an open Whitlow to trim the deficit. Kammerman added his fifth goal of the afternoon off a Sean Kennedy feed and on the ensuing face off, Aidan Sullivan picked up the ground ball and took it all the way to goal for a third consecutive Roanoke score. The Red dragon defense would right itself and keep the Maroons scoreless over the final 2:56 for the 15-11 win.
  • Kammerman had five goals with Whitlow adding three. Caldwell and Gilbert combined for two goals and three assists. Taylor Lewis got the start and went the distance in goal, recording seven saves.

Up Next: After a win over Guilford, Roanoke looks to get off to a 2-0 start in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
