Softball Wins Three Games in Season-Opener

The Lead: Roanoke defeated Wilson 13-0 in five innings, Susquehanna 5-0 and Pitt.-Bradford 8-4 Saturday at the Mountain Mash Tournament in Salem

Game 3

Score: Roanoke 8, Pitt.-Bradford 4
Records: Roanoke 3-0, Pitt.-Bradford 1-3

The Lead: Roanoke secured the three-game sweep with an 8-4 win over Pitt.-Bradford in the final game of the Mountain Mash Tournament.

How it Happened:

  • Pitt.-Bradford scored four runs in the top of the first inning off two hits to take an early lead.
  • Brooke Trapuzzano hit a triple in the bottom of the first, scoring Rebecca Hensley to make it a 4-1 game.
  • Kate Priester and Briana Nardone both walked to start the bottom of the second. Scarlett Sisson then hit an infield single to load the bases. Hensley ripped a single to center, scoring pinch runner Lyndsey Riti and Priester before Shanan Hester drove in Sisson to tie the game at 4-4.
  • Meagan Evans drove in what proved to be the game-winning runs with a two-RBI single in the fourth.
  • The Maroons added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off back-to-back singles from Priester and Kendall Penn to secure the win.
  • Courtney Oliver earned the win allowing four runs off seven hits while Olivia Simmons picked up the save allowing only two hits in the final three innings.

Records: Roanoke 2-0, Susquehanna 1-1
Location: Mountain Mash | Salem, Va.

The Lead: Emily Salsberry allowed only three hits as the Maroons shutout Susquehanna in the second game of the day. 

How it Happened:

  • Salsberry recorded four perfect innings to start of the game, highlighted by striking out the side in the second and third innings.
  • Allison Wagner and Rebecca Hensley led off the third with singles before Shanan Hester hit a shot up the middle, plating the duo and taking a 2-0 lead.
  • In the fifth, the Maroons extended their lead with a two-RBI double from Ellasen Spangler and an RBI single from Anna Clowdis to make it a 5-0 game.
  • Salsberry retired the River Hawks in order in the top of the seventh to take the win, recording 11 strikeouts in the complete game performance.
  • Hensley was 3-for-4 while Clowdis and Brooke Trapuzzano were both 2-for-2 in the contest.

The Lead: Roanoke rolled to a 13-0 five-inning win over Wilson in the opening game of the 2019 season.

How it Happened:

  • Teresa Wagner did not allow a hit in the five-inning performance paired with four strikeouts.
  • The Maroons got on the board with four runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Brooke Trapuzzano.
  • Serenity Bishop led off the third with a double before Meagan Evans drove her in with a ground out to make it 5-0.
  • After scoring two more runs in the fourth, Roanoke scored six runs off five hits in the top of the fifth to put the game away.
  • Kate Priester and Briana Nardone started the inning with two straight walks before Shanan Hester hit a two-RBI single followed by a two-RBI single from Bishop. Meagan Evans kept the inning going with a double to left center, plating two more runs.  
  • Five Maroons recorded multiple hits in the win led by Hensley and Trapuzzano with three each.
