RC Softball Splits Doubleheader with Greensboro

The Basics

 

Game 1
Score: Roanoke 5, Greensboro 3
Records: Roanoke 10-2, Greensboro 9-4
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke opened the doubleheader with a 5-3 win. 

How it Happened:

  • After a scoreless first inning, Serenity Bishop led off the bottom of the second with a double to left center. With runners on first and second, Meagan Evans hit a double scoring Bishop before Anna Clowdis scored off an error in the same play to take a 2-0 lead. Kate Priester then drove in Evans with a single to make it 3-0.
  • Greensboro got on the board with a two-RBI single from Maddy Wetherholt in the top of the fourth to close the gap to 3-2.
  • Roanoke responded with two runs in the bottom go the inning started by Anna Clowdis who etched on a Pride error. Evans hit a double and Priester was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Briana Nardone singled to score Clowdis and Rebecca Hensley plated Evans to extend the lead to 5-2.
  • GC rallied for one run in the top of the fifth off an RBI single from Jordan Deaton but that was as close as the Pride would get.
  • Evans led the way for the Maroons going 2-for-3 with two doubles on the day.
  • Teresa Wagner earned the win allowing only three runs off seven hits while striking out four.
  • For GC, Cassie Collins was 2-for-3 and Wetherholt was tabbed with the loss giving up five runs off six hits. 

Game 2
Score: Greensboro 6, Roanoke 5
Records: Roanoke 10-3, Greensboro 10-4
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Greensboro scored four runs in the seventh inning to earn a split of the doubleheader. 

How it Happened:

  • Greensboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Jordan Deaton and a two-out RBI single from Regan Lockwood.
  • Anna Clowdis hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the second and Alyssa Heath reached on an error. Health then stole second, Greensboro committed an error, allowing Clowdis to steal home and make it 2-1.
  • Rebecca Hensley kicked off the third with a single and Brooke Trapuzzano bunted her over to second. Shanan Hester ripped a double to left to score Hensley. Hester scored later in the inning off a wild pitch to give Roanoke a 3-2 lead.
  • The Maroons held the Pride to just one hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to keep the game at 3-2.
  • Greensboro rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh, tallying just two hits as Roanoke committed three errors in the inning to give GC a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Evans, Hensley and Trapuzzano all hit singles to load the base with one out. With two outs, pinch hitter Serenity Bishop hit a single down the left field line scoring Hensley and Allison Wagnor, who re-entered for Meagan Evans, to make it 6-5 GC but what would be as close as the Maroons would get.
