RC Softball Splits Doubleheader with No. 19 Lynchburg

Game 1

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 6, No. 19 Lynchburg 4
Records: Roanoke 17-15 / 6-7 ODAC | Lynchburg 26-9 / 9-6 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke used a five-run fourth inning to come away with a 6-4 win over No. 19 Lynchburg to open the ODAC doubleheader.

How it Happened

  • Lynchburg was leading 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Brittany Coffey singled with one out before being lifted for pinch runner Olivia Herman. With two outs, Kortney Leazer singled and Herman came all the way around to score to make it 2-0 Hornets.
  • In the Roanoke fourth inning, Anna Clowdis singled to open the inning and would go to second on a one-out Kate Priester single. Kendall Penn would then single to load the bases before a Riley Croghan pinch-hit single got RC on the board at 2-1.
  • Rebecca Hensley was hit by a pitch to bring home Priester and tie the game 2-2. Brooke Trapuzzano singled to plate Penn and give RC a 3-2 lead. Shanan Hester then singled to score a pair and give RC a 5-2 lead.
  • Coffey would deliver a two-out RBI single that scored a pair and cut the RC lead to 5-4 in the top of the fifth. 
  • RC tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hester doubled with two outs. Serenity Bishop then singled to score pinch runner Scarlett Sisson and give RC a 6-4 edge.
  • Lynchburg would threaten in its last at-bat, putting the leadoff runner on, but Emily Salsberry entered the game and got the last three outs to save the win for Teresa Wagner.
  • Wagner improved to 7-5. She allowed four runs on seven hits. Kayley Cox (6-4) took the loss for Lynchburg after going 3.1 innings and giving up five runs.

Game 2

Score: No. 19 Lynchburg 13, Roanoke 0 (5 innings) 
Records: Roanoke 17-16 / 6-8 ODAC | Lynchburg 27-9 / 10-6 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Lynchburg used a seven-run first inning en route to a doubleheader split with Maroons.

How it Happened

  • Lynchburg would take a commanding 7-0 lead in the first inning where the Hornets used six hits and took advantage of two RC errors to jump out in front early.
  • Coffey led off the second inning with a home run to make it 8-0 before an RBI single by Haley Drew and a Leazer RBI double made it 10-0.
  • Salsberry started and lasted just one-third of an inning and giving up four runs. Her record drops to 7-6 on the season.
  • Taylor Belknap picked up the win for Lynchburg to improve to 8-2 on the year. She went all five innings and gave up two hits and struck out six. 
  • Coffey finished 4-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI for the Hornets. 
  • Hailey Baldwin and Briana Nardone each had a hit for RC.
