No. 15 R-MC Takes Two From Roanoke Softball

Score:  Randolph-Macon 3, Roanoke 0
Records: Roanoke 17-19 / 6-11 ODAC | Randolph-Macon 22-12 / 11-8 ODAC
Location:  Ashland, Va.

The Lead: Randolph-Macon took game one of the doubleheader by the score of 3-0.

How It Happened

  • Candace Whittemore tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener for Randolph-Macon.  Whittemore walked one and struck out seven in raising her record to 14-6. She did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. Whittemore retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced, five by strikeout. The only baserunner among those final 12 hitters reached on an error.
  • R-MC got all the runs it would need in the first inning when Maddie Stone drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a base hit by Savannah Wood, who took second on the throw. Brittany LaPrade singled to center, driving in Stone and Wood, to give R-MC a 2-0 edge.
  • Teresa Wagner took the loss for RC after giving up three runs on seven hits. Her record drops to 7-7 on the season.

Game 2

Score:  Randolph-Macon 10, Roanoke 2 (5 innings)
Records: Roanoke 17-20 / 6-12 ODAC | Randolph-Macon 23-12 / 12-8 ODAC
Location:  Ashland, Va.

The Lead: Randolph-Macon swept the doubleheader with Roanoke winning by the score of 10-2.

How it Happened:

  • Roanoke got on the board in the top of the first inning when Rebecca Hensley singled to open the game then scored on a Shanan Hester home run that made it 2-0.
  • R-MC came right back in the bottom of the first inning and scored three runs, going ahead 3-2 on a Taylor Sanderford sacrifice fly.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the second inning then put the game away with a four-run fourth inning with the big hit being an RBI double by Sanderford.
  • Madie Rhoads earned the win in the nightcap, allowing three hits and two runs in five innings with five walks and one strikeout. Emily Salsberry (7-8) took the loss after going 3.1 innings and giving up six runs.

Up Next: Roanoke will host Eastern Mennonite on Senior Day on Monday at 5:00 p.m.
