The Basics – 2022 NCAA Softball Tournament Regional
Score: #13 Roanoke 2 | TCNJ 4

Records: Maroons 30-14 / Lions 28-10
Location: Cleveland, Ohio

The Lead: The Maroons would face The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in an elimination game in the Case Western Reserve Regional of the 2022 NCAA Softball Tournament. TCNJ would use a four-run fourth inning to take control of the matchup. The Maroons would not go quietly as they scored one in the bottom of the fourth and another one inning later to make it a two-run game. However, despite loading the bases twice in the closing innings, the Maroons could not complete the comeback and fell to the Lions 4-2, and would be eliminated from the tournament.

Highlights:

  • Four runs on four hits would give The College of New Jersey a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
  • Makayla Austin led off the fourth with a double to right center and would score on a TCNJ error to make it 4-1.
  • One inning later, Adriana Rivera singled through the left side and advanced on a Shanan Hester base on balls. Rachel Sirbaugh walked to load the bases and bring the go ahead run to the plate. Kate Houle delivered an RBL sacrifice fly. Austin walked, but the Lions would get an inning ending double play to halt the Roanoke rally.
  • In the sixth, Roanoke would once again load the bases. Riley Croghan, Meri Bostic, and Rivera all singled but a pop out to first in foul territory and a strikeout would once again see Roanoke leave runners on base.
  • A 1-2-3 seventh would seal the win for TCNJ and send Roanoke to their second loss of the Regional.

Jada Karnes gave up four runs with only one being earned before giving way to Lindsay Gedro. Gedro pitched 4.1 shutout innings, giving up just three hits with two strikeouts. Rivera was two for three with a run scored. Roanoke would leave 11 runners on base for the afternoon.
