Roanoke Races To ODAC Win

The Lead: After picking up their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win of the season on Thursday night, the Roanoke women's basketball team was back on the road with a trip to Virginia Beach to face the Marlins. The Maroons jumped on their hosts early and cruised to the 92-30 ODAC victory.

How it Happened:

  • Kayla Kinsler hit a three-pointer to spark an 11-0 Roanoke run to take early control of the matchup with the Marlins.
  • At the mid-way point of the opening quarter the Maroons would have a 19-4 advantage. The final five minutes would belong to RC as five different players to combine to close the first period with a 15-0 run and all but put the game away after just 10 minutes of play.
  • Consecutive points by Renee Alquiza, Kristina Harrel, Rose Sande, and Ayanna Scarborough would make the Maroons run 25-0 in between Virginia Wesleyan scores.
  • A Sayre Brandstatter three-pointer would push the lead to 40 with two minutes to play before the break. The spread would be 54-14 at the half. Roanoke would shoot 58% (22-38) while forcing 22 turnovers in the first two periods of play.
  • The RC defense would hold their hosts to 18% shooting during the third frame, building onto the lead with a 19-6 quarter.
  • With 5:42 left on the clock a Jayla Faison jump shot would give Roanoke their largest lead of the game, 84-22.
  • In the end, 11 different Maroons scored while they enjoyed a 44-28 edge on the glass and forced 34 turnovers, leading to 35 points.
  • Harrel led all scorers with 19 to go with a team high eight rebounds and Scarborough added 18 points and seven boards off the bench. Alquiza added 11 points and Whitney Hopson handed out six assists.
  • Sabrina Jones paced the Marlins with eight points and a game high 10 rebounds.

Up next: Roanoke continues the road portion of their ODAC schedule with a trip to Ferrum scheduled for Tuesday night. The game with the Panthers is slated for 7:00pm.
