Petrucelli Hat Trick Leads Roanoke Comeback

The Lead: The Roanoke College women's soccer team welcomed Shenandoah to Kerr Stadium for their 2021 home debut. The Maroons were in search of their first win of the season and it didn't look good as the Hornets enjoyed a 3-0 lead with 30 minutes left to play. A furious rally tied the match and RC would net the game winner less than two minutes before the final horn.

Highlights:

  • Right before the half, the Hornets would take a 1-0 lead into the break.
  • At the 52:17 mark, Shenandoah would add to their advantage and 1:08 later the score would be 3-0.
  • With just over 30 minutes to go, MC Petrucelli took a pass from Ellie Schad to score her first collegiate goal.
  • Schad would make it a one-goal game when she scored her first of the season off an assist by Mia Clary.
  • Roanoke would complete the comeback when Tessa Walsh set up a second score by Petrucelli.
  • The match appeared headed to overtime as the clock hit 88:00. Roanoke was awarded a corner kick and Eliza Ryan went to the corner and sent a perfect pass into the zone. The ball would bounce off players from each team before finding the foot of Petrucelli and the freshman netted the game winner, giving her the hat trick on the afternoon.
  • Carrington Lippi was awarded the win in net, recording four saves.
