The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's tennis team's season-opener came down to the wire with the Maroons prevailing 5-4 over Johnson (Tenn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Royals took an early 2-1 lead after doubles. The team of Lia Striebich and Vic Rios won for the Maroons at #2 doubles 8-3.
  • Julia Bassett won in straight sets for Roanoke at #3 singles and Striebich won at #2 singles to put Roanoke even at 3-3 after Johnson claimed the win at the top singles spot.  
  • Rios won in straight sets at #4 and the Royals responded by winning at #5 singles.
  • Zane Maiden clinched the match for Roanoke with a 6-4, 7-5 win at #6 singles.

UP NEXT

  • Roanoke will be back on court on Sunday, September 25 when it hosts NCAA Division II opponent, UVA-Wise. Match time with the Cavaliers is scheduled for 11 a.m.
