The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's tennis team continued its spring break run in South Carolina with a hard-fought victory over Messiah.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With the dual match tied at 4-4, freshman Victoria Rios clinched the win for the Maroons with a comeback 1-6, 6-4, 10-1 victory against the Falcons' Rebekah Sheaffer at #4 singles.
  • Roanoke had assumed a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Halle Fernstrum and Julia Bassett defeated Kasi Conjack and Isabella Heckman 8-2 at #1, and the team of Rios and Lia Streibich rolled past Sheaffer and Kylie Walker 8-1 at #2. Messiah claimed a point at #3, where Nicole Lee and Anna Lentz knocked off Zane Maiden and Emma Johnson 8-1.
  • The Maroons stretched their lead to 4-1 with convincing wins in the top two singles flights. Fernstrum beat Conjack 6-1, 6-2 at #1, and Streibich handled Heckman 6-0, 6-2.
  • The Falcons evened the match with three singles victories. Walker defeated Bassett 6-3, 6-2 at #3, Lee topped Maiden 6-4, 6-0 at #5, and Lentz bested Johnson 6-1, 6-0 at #6, setting the stage for Rios to secure the match in a tiebreak at #4.
