The Lead: Roanoke swept Mary Baldwin in game one of the Maroon Classic Friday night in Salem.

How it Happened:

  • Linsey Bailey and Sydney Daniel led the way with nine kills each while Tori Clinevill had a team-high 11 digs.
  • Olivia Newman tallied 16 assists in the match and Caitlin Sharkey had 10 of her own.
  • In set one, Roanoke used a 7-1 run capped by an ace from Bailey to take an early 11-4 lead.
  • The Maroons scored six straight points, highlighted by a pair of kills from Bailey and an ace from Parker Moody, to extend the lead to 22-10. Angel Ross and Daniel had back-to-back kills to close out the set.
  • With the score 13-7 RC in the second set, Roanoke scored four straight points and closed out with an ace from Newman to take an 18-7 advantage before going on to win the set.
  • With the score 5-4 in favor of RC in game three, Lauren Heck entered the game to serve nine straight points for the Maroons, including two aces, to take control of the match with a 13-4 lead.

The Lead: Roanoke defeated Averett in five sets to close out day one of the Maroon Classic.

How it Happened

  • Three Maroons recorded double-doubles in the contest as Bailey had 14 kills and 16 digs paired with Daniel who had 17 kills and 15 digs. Newman led the offense with 39 assists and 16 digs.
  • With the score 21-16 RC in the first set, Roanoke won five of the last six points, capped by a kill from Parker Moody to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Averett used a 10-0 run to end the second set and even the match at 1-1.
  • With the score tied at three in the third set, RC reeled off 11 straight points, pushing ahead 14-3 on an AU attack error. The Cougars rallied, cutting it to 23-21, but the Maroons got a kill from Bailey to close out the set.
  • Averett tied things up in the fourth set before RC opened up the fifth and deciding frame, by scoring four straight points.
  • The Maroons took an 11-5 lead as it went on to the 15-10 win to close out the match.

Up Next: Roanoke plays Sewanee at 9 a.m. followed by Piedmont at 11 a.m. in the final day of the Maroon Classic in Salem.
