The Lead: Roanoke College wasted little time in welcoming Southern Virginia to the Cregger Center on Thursday night as they took the first set, 25-16. However, SVU responded by taking the second and after the two teams split the next two frames, the match would head to a decisive fifth set. The Maroons led early but an 8-0 run would see Southern Virginia rally to take the match, 3-2.

Highlights:

  • The opening frame would be tied at the mid-way point before a Roanoke surge gave the Maroons control. After a service miscue by the Knights, Olivia Newman served a pair of aces to spark an 8-0 run that would allow Roanoke to pull away for the 25-16 win.
  • The second set would once again be close at the halfway point. This time it was Southern Virginia that had the answer and after the Knights took nine of the next 10 points, the match would be tied at a set apiece.
  • Set number three would be played to the closest score of the night. Tied at 23-23, Roanoke would use a Kennedy Clemmer service ace and a Linsey Bailey kill to secure the 2-1 advantage.
  • Roanoke started the fourth stanza with three consecutive points. The Knights would respond with nine straight to wrestle the momentum to their side. The Maroons mounted a charge and after back-to-back-to-back attack errors the set was tied at 14-14. Southern Virginia was able to take five of the final six points to force a fifth set, 25-20.
  • Roanoke took an early, 4-2, lead in the deciding set, but Southern Virginia would go on an 8-0 run to seize control and rally for the 3-2 victory.
  • Parker Moody and Peyton Kirchner each recorded 10 kills with Bailey and Angel Ross adding six apiece. Newman handed out 22 of Roanoke's 35 assists while Clemmer led the team with 14 digs.

Up next: Roanoke will go on the road for their third tournament of the season this weekend. The Maroons will play four matches at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic hosted by Wooster (Ohio).
