Maroons Win Twice at Goucher Tri-Match

The Short Story: After dropping the first set, the Roanoke College women's volleyball team never looked back as they won the next three sets for a 3-1 win over Goucher on Saturday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With the Gophers taking the first set 25-21, the Maroons looked to make a statement in the second set and that's what they did. Never trailing, Roanoke used two-runs of four points and two-runs of five points to quickly pull away for the 25-8 set two win, leveling the match at 1-1.
  • Goucher won the first point of the third set, but it was all Maroons after. RC jumped out to a 14-4 lead and did not let the Gophers get within seven points, leading by eight or more points the rest of the set on its way to a 25-16 set three win.
  • A little more back and forth early on in the fourth set, the Maroons and Gophers were tied up at 7-7. Again, never trailing in the set, went on an 8-3 run to pull away, leading by as many as six including the final three points, capped by a Rylee Mayer kill to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Mayer had the match-high 17 kills in the four-set win. Peyton Kirchner also reached double-digit kills with 12.
  • Kirchner and Mayer combined for just five errors while hitting .625 and .438, respectively for the match.
  • Kylee Draper finished with 32 assists and Kennedy Clemmer finished with 20 digs.

The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's volleyball team powered through a 3-0 sweep of Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon to complete the two-match swing up in Maryland.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Maroons committed just one attack error in the first set while jumping out to a 5-0 lead, leading by as man as 12 at 22-10 before closing out with the final two points to take the opener 25-13.
  • Both teams went back and forth early in the second set with the Scarlet Raptors leading 6-5. Roanoke would go on a 17-3 run with three four-point runs and a three-point run to take a 22-9 lead. R-C went on their own run multi-point run but it was not enough as the Maroons claimed the 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 set two win.
  • Once again it was nearly point for point early in the third set before Roanoke used a five-point stretch to take an 11-6 lead. The Scarlet Raptors pull within one at 13-12 before a 9-3 run by the Maroons put the set out of reach. Roanoke took the set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Roanoke hit .275 for the match, the highest percentage in a 3-0 sweep this season. In the first set the Maroons hit .400 with nine kills and just that one error.
  • Rylee Mayer followed up a 17-kill performance against Goucher with 12 kills against the Scarlet Raptors. She hit .346 for the match with just three errors.
  • Kylee Dropper added 23 assists against R-C for 55 for the day.
  • Kennedy Clemmer dug up 12 attacks for the Maroons. She was one of three Roanoke players with three services along with Taylor Maione and Peyton Kirchner.

  • The Maroons return home for their regular-season finale on Tuesday, October 25 when ODAC newcomer Averett pays a visit to the Cregger Center. First serve with the Cougars is scheduled for 7 p.m.
