Jim Buriak, Associate Professor of Health and Human Performance and Athletic Training Program Director, has been at Roanoke College since 1981. Buriak designed and implemented the Athletic Training major from its inception. He was the Maroons’ first professional athletic trainer. Buriak has developed his students into a well-trained staff assisting licensed athletic trainers in the care of student-athletes at both home and away games during their time in the Athletic Training Program. Buriak has had a major role in designing the athletic training facilities in both Bast Gym and the Cregger Center.

For his efforts, Buriak was inducted into the Roanoke College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992, received the Roanoke College Exemplary Service Award in 1994 and was awarded the NATA Athletic Trainer Service Award in 1997. Buriak was also inducted into the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2011.

A native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Buriak earned a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education, and recreation with a specialization in athletic training in 1978 from Lock Haven State College (Pa.). Following that, he earned his Master of Science degree in health education at the University of Illinois in 1980. 

Jim and his wife, Carol, have two children, James and Laura.
