Can anyone join?
Any individual who loves Maroons Athletics and Roanoke College is welcome!
If I join, is my spouse also considered a member of the club?
Membership involves a single individual, but a spouse is welcome as a guest at Club events and activities.
What calendar does membership follow?
Maroon Club years run from July 1 through June 30. Membership begins at the time of the gift and continues until June 30, the end of that fiscal year. For example, if you make a gift on January 1 you will enjoy membership benefits through June 30.
Since I have given to athletics in other years, will I be a Maroon Club member?
No. You will need to renew your contribution to become a Maroon Club member.
Can I make a multi-year pledge towards the Maroon Club?
Multi-year pledges are welcome, but you will need to make the gift in the year of the membership. For example, if you wish to sign up for membership, simply complete a pledge form and the College will send you a reminder each year to make your gift.
Will a restricted gift for a specific sport or recreational activity count towards Maroon Club membership?
Yes. Restricted gifts made and directed to one or more specific sports also count towards membership. For any sport-restricted gift, a 20% reinvestment fee with a cap of $200 dollars will be allocated to the Maroon Club's General Account to help support department initiatives.
Can a Maroon Club gift be directed to assist a particular student?
In order to be counted as a gift or membership, monies may not benefit a single student or donor- selected group of students, per IRS rulings.
Is my membership tax deductible?
A gift of any size to the Maroon Fund is tax deductible. The benefits of membership may vary and are not guaranteed, thereby allowing your membership contribution to remain eligible as a tax deductible gift. Online donations must be processed by December 31 to be used for a tax deduction for the calendar year.
How will my gift to athletics be used if it is under the $100 membership requirement?
Gifts of any size are welcome and will be used to enhance the athletic and recreational programs of Roanoke College. There will not be a reinvestment fee to your contribution since it's under the club membership level.
Will my Maroon Club gift have a reinvestment fee if I wish to not give to a specific sport?
No, any person who gives a non-resricted gift to become a Maroon Club member will not have to use the reinvestment fee as it will already be in the general fund to support the athletic department's initiatives.
Recognition and Involvement
When will events will be held for members?
Our public kickoff of the Maroon Club occured on April 14, 2012, during Alumni Weekend. While members will receive invitations to special events, all alumni and guests are welcome to stop by and learn more about the Maroon Club.
How else can I help athletics and student athletes?
Your involvement may start with the Maroon Club, but there are many more ways for you to help. You may also give larger gifts towards new facilities that are being planned. Remembering the athletic department in your will or estate is also a wonderful way to ensure your legacy for the Maroons.
Will my Maroon Club gift count towards Associates membership?
Yes, any person who gives cash gifts of $1000 or more to the College in a single fiscal year will be recognized as an Associate. Maroon Club gifts are included in this recognition.
Does my gift count towards alumni giving participation rates?
Yes, if you are an alumnus/na of the College, your gift will count towards giving rates.
