LEXINGTON, Va--- Washington and Lee swept Roanoke, 7-6 and 26-1 in a double-header Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Generals improved to 6-6, 4-2 in the ODAC, while the Maroons fell to 6-10, 0-4 in conference play.
W&L rallied in the bottom of the eighth off a two out, two-run triple down the right field line by Johnathon Stutts.
The Generals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a Luke Deary sac fly and a Maroon error.
Roanoke fought back in the top of the third, scoring four runs to take the lead. Benjamin Amos (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) got Roanoke on the board with a two-run double. Robbie Scott (Mt. Kisco, NY, Fox Lane) added to the lead when he singled home Amos. Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) then scored on a Washington and Lee error before the end of the inning. All four runs were unearned.
The Generals responded in the bottom half of the inning retaking the lead 5-4 off RBI singles from Deary, Chris Nault, and Will Salley. In the top of the fourth, Amos hit a sac-fly to score Jeremy Seipp (Arlington, VA, Washington-Lee) and Jacob Clifton (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) drove in Dalton Lipes (Buchanan, VA, James River) to regain the lead for Roanoke.
Both teams remained scoreless until Stutt's clutch triple put things away in the eighth inning. Jake Rudolph picked up the win for Washington and Lee and Greg Laswell registered the save. Michael Haslam (Collegeville, PA, Springfield) took the loss for the Maroons, falling to 2-3 on the year..
Amos led Roanoke with three RBI's and a run. Clifton added two hits and an RBI.
Salley paced W&L, going 4-for-4 from the plate, scoring two runs and batting in one run.
Laswell recorded the victory in game two for the Generals, while Mark Wimmer (Salem, VA, Salem) was credited with the loss for the Maroons. He is now 2-1 on the young season.
