SALEM, Va --- Roanoke defeated Virginia Intermont, 14-2 in non-conference action Wednesday night at Kiwanis field. The Maroons improve to 11-18, 2-11 in conference, while the Cobras dropped to 6-25-2.
In the top of the second inning, John Carbone's RBI drove home Zach Roberts from third base to give Virginia Intermont the early advantage.
Roanoke was quick to respond, as they exploded for a four run inning in the bottom of the second inning. The run was ignited by Jeremy Seipp's (Arlington, VA, Washington-Lee) sacrifice fly, which sent home base runner Nick Sburlati (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) for their first run of the inning. Two batters later, Jacob McMillan's (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) shot to left field brought in another run.
The Maroons were able to put up big scoring innings in the sixth and seventh innings, scoring four runs a-piece, and ultimately putting the game out of reach for the Cobras. The sixth inning surge was highlighted by Jacob Clifton's (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) two run single which brought home Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) and Zack Conner (Indianapolis, IN, North Central). In the seventh, it was Conner who had a two run hit to spark the run.
Roanoke was led by Conner's three-for-four, two run, five RBI performance. His five RBIs puts him at a tie for fifth all time in school history. Others who chipped in were Ben Amos, who went a perfect three-for-three with three runs and a RBI, as well as Manthe who had three hits of his own.
The Cobras struggled offensively all night, but received key contributions from Roberts and Greg Cassady, who both had two hits a-piece. Tyler Turner, who had two hits as well, homered in the ninth inning, but by then the game was far out of hand.
Ryne Farmer (Ringgold, VA, Carlisle), who pitched three innings, gave up only one hit, and notched his first win on the year, while Robbie Stout was tagged in the loss for Virginia Intermont.
The Maroons, who have put up 30 runs in the past two outings, look to build on their two game win streak on Saturday as they host Hampden Sydney in a doubleheader at Kiwanis Field. The first pitch is set to be thrown at noon.
