SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Hampden-Sydney, 7-2 Thursday night at Kiwanis Field. The loss dropped the Maroons to 12-21 on the season, 3-13 in conference, while the Tigers improved their record to 18-17, 8-8 in ODAC play.
Hampden-Sydney jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning, and never looked back. Andrew Tucker sparked the run as his double to right-center was good to drive home two runs for the Tigers. Two batters later, Chris Martin's triple brought home Tucker from second, to give them a 3-0 lead.
Roanoke responded in the bottom half of the inning when Dalton Lipes' (Buchanan, VA, James River) sacrifice fly sent Matt Wallman (Forest, VA, Jefferson Forest) home from third base.
Hampden-Sydney went on to score two more runs in the third inning, which was highlighted by Tucker's RBI double to left center, extending their lead to 5-1.
The Maroons were able to cut the lead again, as they scored what would end up being their last run of the game off of a Jacob Clifton (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) RBI double to left center.
Roanoke was led by Benjamin Amos' (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) two-for-four performance. He also came up big for the Maroons on defense, tallying eight assists, bringing his total to a team-best 71 on the season.
Tucker paced the way for the Tigers with a two-for-three, one run, three RBI outing.
Mark Wimmer (Salem, VA, Salem) took the loss on the mound for the Maroons, dropping his record to 3-2 on the season. Kyle Pullen improved his record to 3-3 on the hill for the victors.
The Maroons will close the regular season with a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite on Saturday. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 1:00 p.m.
