Roanoke College golf seniors: Owen Grayson, Corey Hackett, and Nicholas Peters

The Roanoke College golf team and the entire Department of Athletics would like to take this time to honor our three seniors that have meant so much to the program.

Meet the Roanoke College golf Class of 2020:

Owen Grayson - Charlotte, N.C.

  • Major: Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. After earning his degree, he plans to return to Charlotte to take a job in accounting and plans to take his CPA exam later this summer.
  • Best memories: As a member of the baseball team, Grayson and his teammates earned a trip to the 2017 College World Series. Later, he walked on to the golf team and competed in several tournaments. This past fall, Owen placed 17th in a field of 78 golfers, helping the Maroons to a 6th place finish (12 team field) and earned a spot on the ODAC weekly honor roll for his efforts.
  • Why he chose Roanoke: Baseball coach Matt McGuire recruited Grayson during his senior year. "I didn't even know that Roanoke was a city until Coach Mac started recruiting me."
  • Owen's words to future RC golfers: "Keep building on what we started this year."

Corey Hackett - Roanoke, Va.

  • Major: Business Administration. Upon receiving his degree, Corey plans to further his education and pursue a Master's Degree and start a career in the Marketing field.
  • Best memories: Remembering how nervous and excited he was to compete in his first collegiate tournament, seeing all the hard work and practice pay off. The bond that he was able to form with his teammates on long golf trips and over Spring Break have provided memories that will last forever.
  • Why he chose Roanoke: The opportunity to get a good education and continue to compete at a sport that I love, all while being close to home.
  • Corey's words to future RC golfers: "Don't take this opportunity for granted, it goes by so fast, so enjoy every minute of it. Make sure you are willing to make sacrifices for the team because to be successful, you have to be willing to make personal sacrifices. Finally, Roanoke was once a force in the ODAC, and I believe we can be again."

Nicholas Peters - Salem, Va.

  • Major: Biology. After his time at Roanoke, Peters plans to become a Physicians Assistant and ultimately a Physician.
  • Best memories: Shooting 68 in the final round of the Camp Lejeune Collegiate in 2019. Making par after par in career that would see Nicholas lead the team in finishes numerous times, including a 16th place effort at the 2019 ODAC Championships.
  • Why he chose Roanoke: First, because of the small class size that he knew would allow me to get to know my professors and give me a better education. Second was the golf team and the fact that he could compete in all or most all of the tournaments.
  • Nicholas' words to future RC golfers: "You are coming to Roanoke to get an education so make that your first priority. After that, the two things that will determine if you become a better golfer are how you divide up your golf and social time."

Coach Waggoner on the seniors: "I really appreciate the hard work and leadership that these three young men provided for the golf program. When I came back to Roanoke, my goal was to move the program into the future by getting back to some of the principles that the program had in the past. We needed to get out to the course more, become more of a team, work hard, support one another, and make sure that we were putting in the work and effort that a varsity program should. Owen, Corey, and Nick all bought in to what we were trying to do. They provided support and guidance to a talented group of freshmen and that was a huge part in the success that we had this season. I will be forever grateful for all they have done and any success that the program has in the future will be a result of how these young men handled themselves and helped us build a strong foundation on which the program could grow."
