Maroons Fall In Season Opening Doubleheader

The Basics
Game 1 

Score: Christopher Newport 7, Roanoke 1
Records: Roanoke 0-1 | CNU 1-0
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Four-run sixth inning breaks open a close game as Christopher Newport takes the season opener over the Maroons.

How it Happened:

  • The Captains scored single runs in the top of the 2nd and 3rd to take a 2-0 advantage.
  • RC answered in the bottom of the 3rd when Hailey Baldwin walked and then stole second base. Baldwin would score on a throwing error to trim the lead to one.
  • Four CNU runs in the 6th inning, highlighted by a Tara Deck home run put the game out of reach.
  • Aubrey Bates went the distance for Newport, striking out six and giving up just the one unearned run.
  • Olivia Simmons got the start for the Maroons, striking out three in 3 2/3 innings.

Game 2

Score: Christopher Newport 6, Roanoke 4
Records: Roanoke 0-2 | CNU 2-0
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke took a 4-1 lead into the 5th inning. However, two runs in the 5th and two more in the 6th, propelled CNU to the doubleheader sweep in Salem.

How it Happened:

  • Brooke Trapuzzano singled in the bottom of the 1st and advanced on a throwing error. Karle Cundiff walked and Trapuzzano advanced to third on the wild pitch. Carlie Patterson singled, staking the Maroons to a 1-0 lead.
  • CNU would knot it at 1-1 after an unearned run in the 2nd.
  • RC would score three in the 4th to re-take the lead. Patterson got a leadoff single and advanced to 3rd after Jada Karnes reached on a CNU miscue. Jordyn DiFava executed a SAC bunt to score Patterson and reached on the fielder's choice. A SAC fly by Megan Lee plated a second run while DiFava would score on another Newport error.
  • CNU would score four runs over the next two innings thanks to four hits and a pair of RC errors.
  • The two teams posted identical, seven hit and four error stat lines.
  • Karnes pitched 6 1/3 innings, recording four K's and giving up just one earned run. Patterson and Meri Bostic were each two for four in the nightcap.
