RC Softball Gets Off To 1-1 Start in Florida

Roanoke went 1-1 in Day One of The Spring Games

The Basics
Game 1 

Score: Trine 6, Roanoke 1
Records: Roanoke 2-3 | Thunder 3-1
Location: Clermont, Fla.

The Lead: First inning home run stakes RC to an early advantage, however six unanswered runs by the Thunder sent the Maroons to a loss in the first of 10 games in Florida.

How it Happened:

  • Rebecca Hensley got the Maroons off to a quick start on their Florida trip with a first inning home run.
  • In the bottom of the first, a double and single set the stage for an Amanda Prather home run to left center to give Trine the 3-1 lead.
  • RC would see just two base runners over the next few innings.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Thunder would put the game away. A walk, Roanoke error, and single would load the bases. Trine would score three runs on two hits, three walks, and an error.
  • Hensley was 1-3 with the solo homer while Meri Bostic, Shanan Hester, and Meagen Evans would add a single apiece.
  • Jada Karnes would take the loss, giving up five earned runs and striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings.

Game 2

Score: Roanoke 6, Neumann 0
Records: Roanoke 3-3 | Knights 2-2
Location: Clermont, Fla.

The Lead: RC would make it a 1-1 day with a three hit, shutout, of Neumann University

How it Happened:

  • The Maroons would break open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. Bostic laced a one-out, single to right and advanced to second on a Serenity Bishop base on balls. After a fly out to center made it two outs, Karle Cundiff singled up the middle for the first run of the game. Kendall Penn made it 2-0with a single to left.
  • After a three up, three down, top, the Maroons would add two more runs in the bottom of the 4th. Scarlett Sisson led off the frame with a triple to right then was plated on a Hensley single. Hensley stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Bostic picked up the RBI and doubled the Roanoke lead.
  • An Evans double and sac fly by Penn would make the final 6-0.
  • RC pounded out 13 hits with Penn going 3-3. Sisson was 2-2 and Bostic added a 2-3 afternoon. Penn led the way with two RBI and Bostic scored twice to help lead the Roanoke offense.
  • Olivia Simmons and Hester combined for the three-hit, shutout.

Up Next: RC will be back on the fields at the Hancock Recreation Complex tomorrow with games against John Carroll and Alvernia.
