Many basketball programs are successful, but Green's teams have enjoyed success on more than a regular basis.  His consistency of success is unparalleled, along with his quick rebuilding and its new profound spirit and popularity of the basketball program.

In 1976, he came to Roanoke and the College saw radical changes in its team records and spirit, coming off a 4-23 record that had not been seen since 1930-31 when the Maroons endured its only winless season (0-6).  The 10 wins in the two years before his arrival was the worst since winning only two games during the 1929-31 span.

In 1977, he became head coach and his NCAA Division II team had the greatest turn-around of any NCAA college or university team ever, finishing with a 14-11 record, a 10-win turnaround.

Green's Roanoke teams averaged 22 wins a year and compiled a 260-83 overall record from 1977-1989.  For seven-straight years after his first season in 1977-78, the Maroons enjoyed at least 20 wins or more a season.

Named South Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year five times and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Coach of the Year in 1981. He was also named Eastern Basketball Magazine's Div. III Coach of the Year in 1982.

His 76-percent winning percentage is No. 1 in winning percentages for Virginia Collegiate Coaches.  He also led the Maroons to seven-straight ODAC Championships (1981-87) and to the NCAA post-season every year during that span.  His 1982-83 team holds the school-record for wins in a single-season with 31 and advanced to the National Semifinals.  The 1982 team advanced to the National Quarterfinals.

Green is an inspirational role model as well as an example of integrity and honesty.  He served as the Director of Athletics during his final eight years at Roanoke.
