Irvin was one of the initiators of the Roanoke Valley’s Cosmopolitan Track Meet, an annual event that involves hundreds of the Valley’s youth in track and field competition.
The 12th Annual Cosmopolitan featured the "Benny" Irvin Memorial 880 run for senior boys. The 880 was Irvin's standout event while at Roanoke College, where he was captain of the track team.
Vice President of the Monogram Club.
After graduation and service in the Army, he became active in the Chamber of Commerce and continued to be involved in youth sports activities.
