A member of the Monogram Club, Painter won letters in three major varsity sports.

In 1915 and 1916, he played football.  He was a four-year letterman in basketball and was a starter on the State Championship team of 1916.

In 1915, he established a record for most points won by an individual trackman.  He set records in the high jump, 100 and 220 yard dashes.

He was an active member of the Botetourt County athletic booster club, a Master Mason and an elder in the Fincastle Presbyterian Church.
