Pirro is synonymous with Roanoke College lacrosse, as arguably the best player to ever play for the storied program.  He was the first Roanoke lacrosse player to have his jersey retired.

Perhaps the best overall player in the history of the men’s lacrosse team, Pirro was the first athlete in program history to be named a First Team All-American three times. A two-time winner of the nation’s Most Outstanding Defenseman honors, receiving the award in both 1976 and 1977, Pirro played in the 1977 North/South All-Star Game along with the 1976 Superstars Game.  He was twice named All-South Atlantic Region All-Star.

After a brilliant playing career, Pirro returned to an active role in the program when he became the team’s head coach in 1982. In just his second season, Pirro led the Maroons to the national championship game. In five years as the head coach, Pirro collected 48 wins and won five Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships. He was elected to the Long Island Hall of Fame in 1998.
