Member of the Mongram Club, Potter competed four years in varsity football and track.  As a senior in 1922, he served as the team's captain from his tackle position.  His teammates and coach spoke of him as the most valuable man on the team.  Opposing coaches regarded him as the best tackle in the South Atlantic Division.

Exceptional play on the football field at Roanoke took Potter to Philadelphia, where he played professionally.
