Game Notes vs. Randolph-Macon - Baseball

The Roanoke College baseball team will be playing Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00 pm. The Maroons are 5-7 on the season, and 1-1 in the ODAC as they will play a doubleheader against the Yellow Jackets.

The Maroons are 6-6 against the Yellow Jackets in overall games since 2003, and an overall score record of 73-63. The last win was in 2007 with a score of 7-6. The largest margin of win posted by the Maroons against Randolph Macon was by 15 runs in 2003.
Last Meeting
Salem, VA – The Roanoke College baseball team lost both games in the doubleheader vs. Randolph-Macon (11-4), (6-9) at Kiwanis Field this afternoon. The Maroons fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC. The Yellow-Jackets improved to 10-7 overall and 4-0 in the ODAC. The series is tied at 6-6.
RC 4, RMC 11
Senior centerfielder Matt Vess led the offense as he hit 2-for-4 including three RBI and a two run homerun. Brothers Brennan and Graham Thacker both had two hits to collect one run apiece. Junior Lance Firebaugh hit his second double of his career in the contest.
 
Starting pitcher Drew Wallace threw six innings, struck out four batters and allowed only two walks. Joseph Johannes relieved Wallace in the 7th and walked only two.
 
The Yellow Jackets offense was led by J.C. Conway who hit 2-for-4 including a three run homer. Michael Wallace also hit 2-for-4 including one RBI. Bruno Gomez hit a solo homer in the contest. Charlie Hartt pitched 5.1 innings to earn the win. Hartt struck out three batters and walked two in the game.
 
RC 9, RMC 10
Roanoke trailed 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth, but a two out rally brought in six runs to even the score at 8-8. Chris Zachodzki, Alan Moore, and Jake Furry each hit a home run in the bottom of the inning. Zachodzki went 4-for-5 including five RBI while Moore was 2-for-4 in the contest.
 
The Yellow Jackets took the lead 10-8 in the top of the ninth with a two run homer from Adam Carpenter. Senior third baseman Dan Fallen and Zachodzki each had a hit apiece to help the Maroons retaliate and score one run but fell short with one left on base.
 
In 6.1 innings of work junior pitcher Barrett Henderson struck out three batters. Henderson was relieved by sophomore Cody Kidd in the 7th inning. Despite being credited with the loss, Kidd struck out four batters and allowed only one walk in just 2.2 innings of play,
 
RMC was led by second baseman Greg Meleski who hit 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Leftfielder Michael Wallace hit 3-for-4 including two RBI and one run. In seven innings of work, Byron Mendenhall struck out seven, walked three and allowed only two runs. Dillon Sheads struck out two batters in the 9th to earn the win for the Yellow Jackets

 
Last Time Out
SALEM, Va. --- The Roanoke College baseball team fell short against Milligan College for the second time this season as they lost 4-3 at the Salem Memorial Stadium on Tuesday evening. The Buffaloes improved to 14-7 as the Maroons fell to 5-8 overall. 
Junior Alan Moore went 3-for-4 in the contest and was one single away from hitting for the cycle. He also scored two runs and had one RBI. Moore leads the team with a .380 batting average and 19 hits.
Milligan was the first to score in the second inning off of a series of singles from Crouch, Williams, and Rabon. Roanoke responded in the bottom of the inning after Noah Davidson singled, Patrick Collins doubled and Chris Zachodzki's fielder's choice sent Davidson home.
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Jones hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 Buffaloes. Milligan had four hits to score two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 4-1 edge. The Maroons cut the deficit to two (4-2) in the bottom of the inning off of a triple from Moore and a Jay Laramore RBI.
Moore hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to heat up the bats and make the score 4-3. A single from both Davidson and Collins followed suit but a Buffalo pitching change ended the inning with two left on base. Both Milligan and Roanoke failed to score in the ninth ending the game 4-3.
Collins hit one of three Maroon doubles in his 2-for-4 performance. Davidson went 1-for-3 with one run and one walk.
John Terlesky (0-3) pitched 5.1 innings for Roanoke and struck out four batters. He allowed only one walk in the defeat. William Ruberry struck out two batters in his 3.2 innings of play.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
The Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets are 4-7 on the season, losing 6 out of 7 of their last games, including two losses against Hampden-Sydney College, making them 0-2 in the ODAC. In their last game, a 5-6 loss to Hampden Sydney, first baseman Jordan Walton earned two of the five Yellow Jacket runs in three at-bats.
Scouting the Maroons
The Roanoke College Maroons are 5-7 on the season with an ODAC record of 1-1. Their last win came against Eastern Mennonite University with a score of 11-5. Chris Caputo recorded his second victory on the season, pitching five innings with a strikeout on three different batters. Barrett Henderson earned his first career save with five strikeouts in four innings. Davidson recorded two runs and an RBI, with four other Maroons collecting two hits.
Coach Wood                         
Wood is in his fourth season with the Roanoke baseball program. In his first three seasons he has tallied 39 wins, 21 in the ODAC. Last season, the Maroons were 15-21 and 8-10 in the ODAC, which was the best statistical year since the program was restored in 2002. Previous to joining the Maroons, Wood coached the Glenvar High School baseball team in Salem, Va for twenty years, winning multiple “coach of the year” titles.

Record Watch

Alan Moore is currently ranked third all-time in career homeruns with nine.  He is also three hits shy of ranking fourth all-time in hits (107). Moore is ranked sixth all-time in career RBI and needs nine to tie Brandon Coates '06 for fifth (65).  He is also second all-time in doubles with 30.

Graham Thacker is ranked seventh with 51 career RBI and is tied for sixth all-time with 19 career doubles.

Noah Davidson is currently ranked second all-time in career walks with 33.  He is seven away from tying Brennan Thacker '08 for first (40). He is also tied for fourth with Mike Eubank '05 in stolen bases (9). Davidson is fourth all-time in career triples (4), just two behind Nate Unroe '07 (6).
