Maroons Sweep VA Intermont in Home-Opener

SALEM, Va. – The Roanoke College baseball team swept Virginia Intermont to claim its first two victories (7-6; 17-6) of the season at Kiwanis Field on Tuesday. The Maroons improved to 2-1 which is the best start since the 2003 season (3-1). With the loss, VA Intermont fell to 0-5 on the season.
 
In the first game of the doubleheader, Roanoke scored in the second, fourth, seventh and eighth innings to seal their first win of the season. Six Maroons had a hit in the contest including a walk-off homer from Patrick Collins in the bottom of the seventh. Jay Laramore also hit his first home run of his Roanoke career.
 
Laramore and Collins both had two runs in the victory while Graham Thacker, Noah Davidson, Brad Greenway, and Lance Firebaughall recorded a RBI.
 
Barrett Henderson threw five innings to strike out four batters. Jordan McGranerearned his first career win by striking out four batters and allowing only one walk in three innings of play. 
 
Roanoke came out stronger offensively in the second game, scattering 15 hits and scored in every inning highlighted by a seven-run fifth inning. The men jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first four innings and never looked back. The Maroons continued to pound away, scoring 13 runs in the final two innings.
 
Alan Moore, Matt Herron, Thacker, Davidson and McGranerall doubled in the contest and sophomore Michael Kluge hit his first career triple.
 
McGraner and freshmanChris Boylan went 3-for-3 and 2-for-2 respectively and combined for five runs. Davidson and Moore both went 2-for-4 and had two runs apiece.
 
Chris Caputo was credited with his first win of the season, pitching five innings to strike out three batters and walk one. Greenway also saw time on the mound as he struck out three hitters.
 
The men are back in action as they travel to Ferrum on Thursday, Feb. 12 for more non-conference action. Roanoke is 1-7 against the Panthers all-time and won the last contest 6-3 on Apr. 4.
