Roanoke falls in Second-Straight Extra Inning game against Guilford, 9-8

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke blew a two-run lead in the top of the eighth and allowed a home run in the top of the 11th en route to a 9-8 loss to Guilford on Tuesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 8-16 overall and 3-9 in ODAC play. The Quakers improved to 17-11-1, 6-4 in the conference.
The extra-inning loss was the second in as many games as they dropped a 12-8 11-inning decision last Sunday in game two of the Maroons doubleheader against Bridgwater.
Roanoke jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead as Chris Zachodzki's double to left center brought in Noah Davidson and Patrick Collins.
Guilford tied the contest in the top half of the third as Josh Sumler's RBI single brought home Joe John and Terrance Penn to make it, 2-2.
In the bottom half of the third, Alan Moore's sacrifice hit brought in Jordan McGraner, who got on with a single to regain the lead, 4-3.
The Quakers answered back in the top half of the fourth with a RBI-double from Sumler that scored Kyle Wooden to tie the game for a second time, 4-4.
The Maroons took the lead for a third time in the bottom half of the inning to make it, 6-3. Davidson reach first on a fielding error while Collins and John Terlesky walked to load the bases. McGraner delivered a two-out single up the middle that scored Davidson to take the lead. Graham Thacker's two-RBI single to centerfield brough home Collins and Terlesky as Roanoke took a three-run lead.
Starting Pitcher Joseph Johannes got into a pinch with bases loaded and no outs in the top of the fifth. John Goodwin's single drove in a run to cut the Quakers' deficit to within two.
With the bases juiced again, Terlesky came up with a huge double-play as he caught a line drive and tagged first base to make it two outs. Davidson tracked down a fly out to dead center to get out of the jam.
Guilford closed the gap to one in the top of the sixth as Sumler scored off John's single to right field to make it, 6-5. Firebaugh's catch at the warning track ended the Quakers' threat to tie the game for a fourth time.
The Quakers took the lead in the top of the eighth as they scored three runs to make it, 8-6. Roanoke loaded the bases again with no outs and weren't able to get out of the jam. John got on base with an RBI on a catcher's interference call to tie the contest. Sumler scored to take their first lead of the contest off a sacrifice fly and Penn scored the insurance run off a fielder's choice.
The weather went from bad to worse as the sun went down, the temperature dropped significantly and the snow came with high winds by the eighth inning.
Roanoke fought back against the bad weather as Zachodzki reached base off an error. He advanced to second as Terlesky forced a walk to put runners on first and second. Lance Firebaugh's bunt advanced the runners to second and third to set up Thacker's RBI-single down the left field line to close to within one, 8-7.
Moore collected his second hit of the game with two outs which brought in Terlesky to tie the game at 8-apiece heading into the ninth.
The game went into extra innings and the defense was outstanding.  Thacker's diving catch prevented a scoring opportunity for the Quakers for the first out. Terlesky's glove proved valuable once again as he turned a double play to end the inning.
The win wasn't meant to be as Drew Gurkin sent a shot over the left field wall for the eventual game-winner as the Quakers produced three outs in the bottom half to end the game.
Johannes pitched six innings in his no-decision effort with one strikeout and allowed three earned runs. Barrett Henderson (1-3) took the loss in relief for the Maroons, striking out three in four innings.
Thacker and Moore each finished 3-for-6 with three and two RBI's, respectively. McGraner collected two hits with a run and an RBI. Davidson, Collins and Terlesky each scored twice in the loss.
Guilford was led by Sumler, going 5-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Kyle Wooden went 3-for-6 with a run while John and Alex Starbuck collected two hits and two RBI's apiece.
The men will travel to Lynchburg College in a pivotal ODAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 11. The Maroons are 1-13 in the series against the Hornets, but defeated them, 4-3 last season. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
