Roanoke drops to 2-2 with 8-7 loss to Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. --- The Roanoke College baseball team fell to 2-2 on the season with an 8-7 loss to Ferrum on Thursday evening at Panther Field. The Panthers improved to 2-1 overall and hold an 8-1 record vs. the Maroons. 

Roanoke was the first to score in the second inning off of a solo homer from Brad Greenway, his third career home run.   Ferrum responded in the bottom of the fourth after Fuller tripled to right center and a sacrifice fly from Fowlkes sent him home. 
 
The Maroons added three runs off of four hits in the fifth to give the men a 4-1 edge. Lance Firebaugh, Alan Moore, Graham Thacker, and Jordan McGraner all singled in the inning. Roanoke scored two more in the seventh to stretch the Maroon lead to five (6-1). 
 
Ferrum answered in the bottom of the seventh with four hits including three doubles. The Panthers scored six runs in the inning to give them the first lead of the game, 7-6.
 
In the eighth inning, Firebaugh hit his third career double, followed by a McGraner fielder's choice and RBI single from Thacker to give tie the game at 7-7.
 
The Panthers scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
 
Junior Cody Kidd nearly equaled last year's performance against the Panthers, pitching six innings, striking out five batters and allowing only two walks and one run. William Ruberry saw time on the mound and struck out two batters in his first outing. Ruberry was credited with the loss.
 
Thacker went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, two runs and two RBI. Moore and Firebaugh both hit .500 (2-for-4) to combine for one RBI and two runs.
Mays, Cauley and Finch combined for 11 strikeouts and only one walk. Finch earned the win for the Panthers. 
The Maroons will host UM-Presque-Isle on Tues. Feb. 17, at Kiwanis Field. The game will be the first meeting between the Owls and the Maroons. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
