Baseball Splits with HSC Tigers

Salem, VA ---  The Roanoke College baseball team split in a doubleheader this afternoon at Hampden-Sydney College.  The Maroons have improved to 15-21 on the season and 8-10 in the ODAC.  This win has kept the men in the running for a 6th place seed in the ODAC tournament which will be held next week at Lynchburg City Stadium.  The Tigers improved to 17-23 and 8-10 in the conference. 

RC 4, HSC 3

 

Roanoke got the bats rolling in the third inning with three runs scored off of three hits.  Brad Greenway led off the inning with a hit by pitch followed by a sacrifice bunt from Chris Zachodzki.  Noah Davidson and Brennan Thacker both singled along with a double from Graham Thacker.  Matt Vess had one RBI in the inning off of a sacrifice fly to center field.  Hampden-Sydney managed to retaliate in the bottom of the inning with two

runs off of three hits and one Roanoke error. 

 

The Maroons scored their last run of the game in the fifth inning off of a G. Thacker double, his second of the contest.  He went hit 3-for-4 with two runs scored.  Greenway went 2-for-2 with one run scored in the contest. 

 

Pitcher Barrett Henderson earned his fourth win of the season sticking out 2 batter in  6.2 innings of work.  Drew Wallace appeared in the bottom of the seventh and earned the save for the Maroons, his fifth of the season, sixth career.  Wallace is now tied with Nate Unroe (2007) with most career saves.

 

Hampden-Sydney's offense was led by shortstop Harrell who hit 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.  Also collecting a hit each were Toney and Harrelson.  Hadras was credited with the loss for the Tigers but struck out five batters in seven complete innings.

 

RC 3, HSC 10

 

Roanoke and Hampden-Sydney both led the game off with one run scored apiece in the second inning.  The Tigers scored off of a Venezuela triple and double from Prill.  Venezuela was 3-for-4 in the contest with one RBI and two runs scored.  Jake Furry doubled in the second followed by an Alan Moore RBI single.  Furry finished the contest with one run scored and three hits. 

 

Roanoke then jumped ahead in the fourth inning with a single from both B. Thacker, Patrick Collins, and Moore.  Moore hit 3-for-4 in the contest and led the Maroon offense with two RBI.   The Tigers took over the game in the fifth inning with three runs off of three hits.  They scored in each of the remaining innings.

 

Roanoke managed to get hits in each of the remaining innings but in a valient effort to chip away at the lead the Maroons fell short.  A one run inning of three hits in the seventh inning was the Maroons final attempt at a comeback.   The Maroons finished the contest with 13 hits and only one error.  All but one of the men tallied a hit in the game.

Wallace was credited with the loss but managed to strike out two batters in 4.2 innings of play.  Cody Kidd and Joesph Johannes both made appearances and struck out a combined three batters in the contest.

 

Hampden-Sydney pitcher Bailey pitched 6.2 innings to earn the win and struck out three batters.  West also struck out three batters in just 1.1 innings of work.

 

The Maroons will await the announcement of the sixth seeded team that will advance to the ODAC Tournament.  The ODAC tournament will be held at the Liberty City Stadium next week.  Games start Thursday, April 25, 2008.
