Baseball Splits ODAC-opener against EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. --- The Roanoke College baseball team split their ODAC-opener vs. Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 5-6 overall while the Royals now stand at 5-9-1.  Roanoke dropped the first game 6-5 and won the second contest in nine innings, 11-5. Both teams are 1-1 in conference action.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Maroons scored two runs in the first inning for the early 2-0 lead. The Royals answered back in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer for a 3-2 edge. EMU added another run in the second and third inning to increase the lead to three (5-2).
 
Noah Davidson led off the sixth inning with a single followed by a double from Patrick CollinsThe two hits scored three to tie the score at 5-5. EMU claimed the game in the bottom of the seventh with two singles to produce the winning run.
 
Cody Kidd threw his first complete game of the season and was credited with the loss. He struck out four batters and allowed only two walks.
 
In the second matchup, the Maroons produced 10 hits to score three runs in first, second, and third inning. EMU scored one run in the second and fourth inning to make it 9-2 and continued to chip away at the lead in the fifth inning by scoring an additional three runs (9-5).
 
The Maroon bullpen held the Royals scoreless for the remainder of the game and the offence tacked on an additional run in the eighth and ninth inning for a final score of 11-5.
Chris Caputo pitched five innings and struck out three batters in his second victory of season. Barrett Henderson saw four innings on the hill to strikeout five batters and earn his first career save.
 
Davidson went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Graham Thacker, Alan Moore, Jay Laramore, and Brad Greenway each collected two hits in the victory.
 
The Maroons are back in action on Monday as they host Shenandoah at the Salem Memorial/Lewis Gale Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
