Baseball Downs UM-Presque Isle in Six Innings

SALEM, Va. ---Freshman Chris Boylan was one of eight Maroons to get a hit in the18-0 victory over University of Maine – Presque Isle on Tuesday afternoon at Kiwanis Field. Roanoke improved to 3-2 on the season which ties the 2003 season (3-2) for the best start. The Owls dropped to 0-4.

Boylan, a Cave Spring product, led the Maroons as he went 3-for-3 with his first career double and triple in the contest.  He also contributed three runs and four RBI.

Roanoke scored nearly half of its runs in the first inning highlighted by doubles from Alan Moore, Noah Davidson, Brad Greenway, Chris Zachodzki, and Boylan, making it, 7-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, John Terlesky singled, stole second and scored off of a dropped ball in left field hit by Davidson. The run gave the Maroons a comfortable 8-0 lead. 

The scoring barrage continued with a 10-run fifth inning, which was the biggest for the Maroons. The 10 runs was the most in an inning since Mar. 5, 2008 against Lake Erie. Seven of the ten runs were scored with two outs including a two-run homer to left center from Zachodzki which ties Kirby Hamilton ('06) for fourth place all-time in career homeruns (8).
 
Zachodzki, McGraner, and Terlesky all went 2-for-3 in the contest and combined for seven RBI. Collins hit 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Moore also added two hits, two runs and one RBI in the victory.
 
Roanoke's bullpen had a strong showing backed by a tough defense as they kept the Owls from scoring. Cody Kidd started and earned his first win of the season. He pitched two innings, struck out four batters and allowed only two hits. Barrett Henderson and Chris Caputo both pitched two innings followed by Matt Herron in his college debut on the mound.
 
UMPI's Corey Harding faced 22 batters in his four innings of play, striking out one. Clint Carter and Caleb Hale both pitched an inning for the Owls and allowed only one walk. 
 
The men will travel to Fayetteville, NC on Feb. 20 for a tournament at Methodist University. The men will face Frostburg State at 10:00 am and Methodist at 4:00 pm on Friday and Huntingdon (10:00 am) and Lynchburg (7:00) on Saturday. It will be Roanoke's first meeting against Huntingdon, Methodist, and Frostburg St. The Maroons are 1-13 overall against Lynchburg and split with them (W, 4-3; L, 9-15) last season.
