HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Hampden-Sydney, 6-2 and 9-1 in ODAC doubleheader action Saturday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field. The Maroons fell to 10-18 overall, 6-10 in the ODAC. The Tigers improved to 20-7-1, 12-4 in conference play.
Roanoke held a brief 2-0 lead after the top of the first, but dropped the opener, 6-2. Alan Moore (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)brought home Graham Thacker (Forest, VA, Jefferson Forest)with an RBI-double to bring in the first run of the ball game. A Jay Laramore (Pfafftown, NC, Guilford)single put runners on the corners as Barrett Henderson (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spirng)brought home Moore with an RBI-single to give the Maroons the early advantage.
But just as quick as Roanoke gained the lead, it evaporated. The Maroons gave up five runs in the bottom of the first to take a three-run lead. The Tigers added a run in the sixth to end the scoring.
Cody Kidd (Salem, VA, Glenvar)(3-4) took the loss for Roanoke. Tyler Grouten (Avon, CT, Avon)pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing only one run and struck out four batters.
Hampden-Sydney won its 20th game of the season in convincing fashion, 9-1 in the twin bill. The Tigers broke the 1-1 tie with a six-run third inning to run away with the win.
Laramore was hit by a pitch, Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg)singled and Henderson walked to load the bases with no outs in the top of the second. Zack Conner (Indianapolis, IN, North Central)hit an RBI-single as Laramore scored the first run of the game. But with the bases juiced, Roanoke struck out twice to end what could've been a big inning.
Roanoke had another scoring threat for a chance to take the lead in the fourth. Moore singled and Laramore walked to put a runner in scoring position, but couldn't manufacture a run. The same scenario happened in the seventh, but again came up without a run.
Chris Caputo (Dunwoody, GA, Dunwoody)(0-5) took the loss for the Maroons. Michael Haslam (Collegeville, PA, Springfield)finished the contest, striking out a season-best five batters with only one run allowed in 4.1 innings of work.
Moore moved into second all-time in at bats (434) and tied Brennan Thacker's '08 career scoring record (88). He is now only three RBI's shy of tying the career record held by Nathan Unroe '07.
The men will host Virginia Intermont this Wednesday in non-conference action. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Kiwanis Field.
