Roanoke Drops Three Games in Methodist Diamond Invitational
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --- Roanoke fell to Methodist, Frostburg St. in a doubleheader, and to Huntingdon this weekend in the Methodist Diamond Invitational this weekend in North Carolina. The Maroons record now stands at 2-5.
 
Methodist broke the game wide open with a six-run third inning en route to a 12-0 win over Roanoke in the first game of the weekend.  The Monarchs capitalized on three Maroon errors in the third to help its scoring barrage.
 
Methodist rattled off four additional runs in the sixth to kill any chance of a Roanoke rally.
 
Sergio Davis and Tripp Lancaster finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Dustin Brown hit 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Monarchs finished with 13 stolen bases as a team. Andrew Womble pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts for the win.
 
C.J. Poad (Clinton, MD, Riverdale Baptist)Dalton Lipes (Buchanan, VA, James River)Zack Conner (Indianapolis, IN, North Central) and Robbie Scott (Mt. Kisco, NY, Fox Lane) collected a hit for the Maroons. Zack Folger (Forest, VA, Jefferson Forest/Bridgewater) (0-1) went 2.2 innings, giving up six hits but allowed only one earned run and had two strikeouts.
 
Frostburg State (2-1) swept Roanoke in a Saturday doubleheader with scores of 9-1 and 7-0. 
 
The Bobcats scored early and took a three-run lead in the sixth inning. The Maroons scored their only run of the game on the bottom of the sixth and threatened to tie the score with runners in scoring position, but FSU was able to get out of the jam and stay on top, 3-1.
 
FSU tacked on two more runs in the eighth and added four more in the ninth to solidify their 9-1 win.  Matt Ridenour earned the win on the mound, throwing five innings, striking out four and scattering five hits.
 
In the twin bill, the Bobcats took advantage of four errors by the Maroons and handed them a 7-0 loss.  Ross started the game on the mound, tossing 8.0 innings and striking out a season-high 10 batters. Greg Ross (1-0) allowed only two hits and two walks on the day.
 
Ross settled down after a rocky second inning that included two wild pitches. With runners on second and third, the Maroons were threatening, but Ross struck out the side and keep Roanoke scoreless.
 
FSU came out the gate quickly, scoring four runs in the first three innings of the game. The Bobcats scored a run in the seventh and added two more in the eighth. The defense held on for the shutout.
 
Michael Haslam (Collegeville, PA, Springfield) (0-1) suffered the loss for Roanoke going six innings, giving up four runs, two earned with three strikeouts.

In the final game of the weekend invitational, Huntingdon defeated Roanoke, 13-5. Junior Kevin Aaron struck out eight batters in six innings of action for the Hawks for his first win of the season.
 
Huntingdon was led by senior Stephen Bishop with a game-high four hits in five at bats. Bishop also scored four of the Hawks' 13 runs.  The Hawks recorded 15 hits in its sixth victory of the season, led by Keegan Lambeth's 3-for-4 performance.
 
Huntingdon (6-2) scored a combined nine runs on 10 hits in the first three innings of the game holding Roanoke scoreless with only a pair of hits. In the bottom of the fifth, Huntingdon sent four runners home taking a 13-0 commanding lead.
 
Roanoke (2-5) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth off Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) double to left center to bring in Jeremy Seipp (Arlington, VA, Washington-Lee).  The Maroons added three runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to give the final result.
 
Ryan Cale (Fisherville, VA, Wilson Memorial) went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI to lead the Maroons. Seipp drove in two runs while Conner scored twice. Scott Thurston (Glen Allen, VA, J.R. Tucker) doubled for Roanoke.
 
Manthe (0-2) gave up seven runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Roanoke's bullpen went through five pitchers for the game.
 
The men return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 22 as they travel to Danville, VA to take on Averett in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
