Baseball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan In ODAC-Doubleheader
SALEM, Va--- Roanoke dropped both games of a double-header, 2-1 and 14-2 Saturday afternoon at Kiwanis Field. The Maroons fell to 8-13, 0-7 in conference play, while the Marlins improved to 11-13, 5-4 in ODAC-action.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Roanoke's Tyler Grouten (Avon, CT, Avon) and Wesleyan's Alex DeJesus. Both teams went scoreless until the top of the seventh when VWC stuck first. Shayne Paskanik led off the inning with a double to left center field. Josh Miller then sacrificed him over to third base before Brett Sutyrk drove in the game's first run.

Grouten cruised through the eighth inning and entered the top of the ninth trailing just 1-0. Paskanik reached again on another double to left field and then scored on two costly Roanoke errors. The Maroons committed three errors in the inning. 

In the bottom half of the final frame RC responded. The home team showed great resiliency to try and get back in the game.  Robbie Scott (Mt. Kisco, NY, Fox Lane) led off with a walk and Jacob Clifton (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) then singled to left field to advance him to third. Clifton's high school teammate, Jacob McMillan (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) followed with an RBI-single to right field, to cut the deficit to just one. With the tying run on third base and a runner on first, Roanoke left Clifton stranded, ending the game on a hard-hit lineout to left field and a strike out.

Paskanik paced the Marlins, going 3-for-4, with two doubles, and two runs on the day. Jacob Pierce and Pike Brynildsen chipped in one hit each.

Dalton Lipes (Buchanan, VA, James River)
led Roanoke, finishing 2-for-2 from the plate, while drawing a walk as well. McMillan, Clifton, Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg), and Benjamin Amos (Vinton, VA, William Byrd) all added one hit, while McMillan drove in the only run of the afternoon for the Maroons.

Grouten took the loss on the hill for Roanoke, pitching a complete game while allowing just five hits, two earned runs and striking out two. DeJesus picked up the victory for the Marlins, pitching seven innings of shut-out baseball. He allowed four hits and struck out four, Tyler Tweedy recorded the save.

In game two, RC got off to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Scott Thurston (Glen Allen, VA, J.R. Tucker) led off with a walk and then scored on an RBI-double by AmosClifton later singled him to give the the Maroons their only advantage of the game.

Virginia Wesleyan rallied in the top of the third, scoring seven runs to take the lead for good and cruise to victory. VWC then scored three runs in the fourth, three in the sixth, and one in the ninth to give the final score. The Marlins outhit the Maroons 15-5. Roanoke committed four errors in the second game.

Wesleyan was led by Mike McCutcheon who went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs. Miles Shipp also added two hits, three RBI's and two runs, while the Marlins had 10 different players register a hit on the contest.

Amos was the only Roanoke player to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. 
Michael Haslam (Collegeville, PA, Springfield) was tagged with the loss for the Maroons, while Jeremy Hagwood picked up the win in relief for the Marlins.

Roanoke returns to action Tuesday, March 22nd as they host Guilford College. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 7:00 p.m.
