Baseball Drops 5-1 Decision to Bluefield

SALEM, Va --- Roanoke fell to Bluefield College, 5-1 Monday night at Kiwanis Field.  The Maroons drop to 9-16 on the season, while the Rams improved to 9-17 on the year.

Bluefield jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Zac Goodyear's sacrifice fly drove in Andrew Dickerson from third base.

It did not take Roanoke long to respond, as Scott Thurston (Glen Allen, VA, J.R. Tucker) scored off of a Mark Manthe (Blacksburg, VA, Blacksburg) RBI-groundout in the bottom of the third.

The score remained knotted up at one-a-piece until the top of the fourth inning, when Goodyear turned on an inside pitch and crushed it down the third base line for a two-run homerun.  Bluefield then went to put the game out of hand in the top of the seventh inning as they were able to pile on two more runs.

The Maroons, who struggled on offense, were led by Manthe's one hit, one-RBI performance.  He also was a force on the mound, pitching six innings and registering five strikeouts, while allowing only five hits.

Goodyear paced the way for the Rams with his two hit, three RBI outing.  Joe Gatewood was able to contribute as well tallying three hits of his own.

Roanoke will be given a chance to redeem themselves this Wednesday, March 30th as they host Emory and Henry.  The first pitch is set to be thrown at 7:00 p.m.
