Baseball Sweeps Virginia Intermont in non-conference Action
BRISTOL, Va. – Roanoke swept Virginia Intermont in a non-conference doubleheader on the road Tuesday.  The Maroons, who improve to 4-5 on the season, won game one, 14-10 and 7-6 in the twin bill.
 
The Cobras, who entered the contest 4-1 on the season, fought back in the seventh inning of game one, but couldn't overcome a nine-run deficit and fell to Roanoke, 14-10.  The Maroons allowed three straight walks in the seventh after the Cobras loaded the bases with just one out but couldn't capitalize to suffer the defeat.
 
The Maroons, who have won four-straight, collected a season-best 15 hits and 14 runs in the game one victory.  Matt Wallman led Roanoke going 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run and an RBI.
 
Mark Manthe collected two hits with a double and a season-high three RBI while Chad Hill went 2-for-3 with a season-best four RBI.  Ben Amos had two base hits including two runs and two RBI.  Brian Kluge and Alex Crittenden combined for four hits, two RBI and three runs scored.
 
Tyler Grouten (1-0) earned his first win of the season, going five innings with five strikeouts on the mound for the Maroons.
 
VIC pitcher Zach Fernandez failed to get out of the first inning allowing 6 runs.  The Maroons continued the rout with seven fourth-inning runs in the fourth inning before the Cobras were able to tack more runs on the board.
 
In game two, the Maroons scored three runs to take an early 3-0 advantage.  The Cobras used a five-run sixth inning rally to take a two-run lead, 5-3.
 
The Maroons grabbed two runs in their next at bat to keep the game going and then added two more in the top of the eighth to take a the lead, 7-5.  VIC was able to get one run in the bottom half of the inning stranded a runner on third, preventing them from splitting the double header.
 
Amos and Manthe collected three hits each with Manthe adding two doubles and two RBI while Amos scoring twice.  Jacob Clifton had a single and a double while Dalton Lipes added a two-RBI single.
 
Robbie Scott (1-0) earned the victory in relief while Mark Wimmer went five innings of shutout baseball, scattering seven hits.
 
The men will host Alvernia on Saturday, Feb. 25 in non-conference action at Kiwanis Field.  Game time is scheduled for noon.
