Maroons Go 2-1 During Spring Break Games, Includes Two Complete Game Victories
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Roanoke Baseball Team defeated Wilkes University and split wins with King's College during their 2012 Spring Break trip over the weekend.  After the weekend Roanoke now sits at 7-7 overall, heading in to their Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.

After getting rained out on the first day, The Maroons were able to get back to action on Sunday as they faced off against Wilkes University.  Roanoke got behind early as Wilkes posted three runs in the second inning, but the Maroons started to chip away at the lead.  In the third inning, Chad Hill scored off an error by the shortstop, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Maroons wouldn't score again until the seventh inning, as Dalton Lipes scored off an error by the first baseman.  That run was followed by a two RBI triple by Ben Amos, scoring Brad Mattox and Brian Kluge.  This put Roanoke ahead of Wilkes, 4-3.  In the eighth, the Maroons put one more on the board as Matt Wallman scored off a Caylen Baire sacrifice fly.  Roanoke walked away from game number one with a 5-3 victory.

Jacob McMillan threw a complete game, giving up three runs off six hits and striking out four.

The Maroons ran into a wall against King's College, who posted 12 runs in the first three innings of play on Sunday evening.  Roanoke tried to battle back, scoring eight runs over the next five innings.  The Maroons fell 15-8 at the end of the night game.  Bright moments included a four run eighth inning which saw Josh Wolinski knock in an RBI, and a Camden Croy double that posted two RBI's.  Louis Simonetti capped off the inning knocking in Croy.

Roanoke took that momentum from the end of the Sunday night game and put it forward in their rematch against King's on Monday.  The Maroons opened with two runs in the first as Wallman doubled for two RBI's, scoring Amos and Kluge.  The team scored again in the second as a heads up play by Alex Stepp, who took home on a dropped third strike throw, giving the Maroons the 3-0 lead.

Roanoke extended their lead in the fifth, as Lipes singled to center, knocking in two runs.  Kluge followed with a bunt that scored Jacob Clifton, then Mattox gets walked in with the bases loaded to give Roanoke the 7-0 lead.

The Maroons scored three more runs by the end of the game to defeat King's College 10-0.  Michael Haslam pitched a complete game shutout against King's.  He only allowed five hits, walked one and struck out two.

Roanoke will be in action again this weekend on Saturday March 10th, as the Maroons face off in their ODAC opener against Washington and Lee.  The first pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
