Bluefield earned eight runs off eight hits in the top of the first inning, which set the tone for the remainder of the game. The Maroons tried to chip away at the deficit in the first couple of innings, as Ben Amos hit a double off the wall in the first inning to score Manthe from first. Brian Kluge hit a double of his own in the second to score Caylen Baire and bring the score to 8-2.
On the mound, Tim Sherbo entered in the top of the first with one out. Sherbo was able to settle the Rams momentarily as he pitched for 11 outs off 13 batters through the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Bluefield got back on the board by scoring two runs off two hits. The Maroons responded quickly as Manthe crushed a two-run homer to left-center field to make the score 10-4.
Bluefield, scored three more runs in the sixth, then one more in the eighth to put the contest out of reach for the Maroons, as the game was called in the eighth inning with a score of 14-4.
Manthe went 2-for-4, scoring two runs and two RBIs. Kluge hit 2-for-3 on the day with one run and one RBI. Sherbo pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs off two hits and struck out two batters.
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 28th, as they play host to Emory & Henry at Kiwanis Field in Salem. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
