Baseball Splits with Hampden-Sydney in Conference Doubleheader
FARMVILLE --- Roanoke split with Hampden-Sydney in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball action Saturday afternoon at Ty Cobb Ballpark.  The Maroons record now stands at 14-18 overall, 5-8 in the ODAC.  The Tigers are now 10-19, 5-6 in conference play.
Roanoke, who won their 14th game of the season with a 6-1 victory over H-SC in game one, are two wins shy of tying the school-record with the 2005 team.

Dalton Altizer (2-0) went the distance for Roanoke, scattering eight hits and allowed one run with six strikeouts.

Matt Wallman led Roanoke with a single, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.  Caylen Baire went 2-for-4 while Alex Stepp had a single, a triple, a run and an RBI.  Jacob Clifton scored twice and had an RBI-single.  Bradley Mattox had a two-RBI single and stole a base in the win.

Down 1-0, Roanoke took the lead with a three-run fifth inning.  Wallman opened with a walk and advanced to third after Stepp reached base on an error by the pitcher to put runners on each corner.  Clifton earned an RBI on a fielder's choice to bring home Wallman to tie the score, 1-1.

Chad Hill was hit by a pitch and Baire laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases with Mattox coming to the plate.  Mattox drew a walk to bring home Clifton and took the lead for good, 2-1.  Hill was brought home thanks to a Dalton Lipes sacrifice fly to make it, 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, Wallman doubled and was brought home by Stepp's RBI-single to extend the Maroons lead to 4-1.  Roanoke added two more runs in the eighth to help seal the victory.

Roanoke used back-to-back triples to lead of the second game to jumpstart to a 2-0 lead.  Mattox opened the game with a triple and was brought home by an RBI-triple by Lipes.  Lipes was brought home by Mark Manthe's sacrifice fly.

In the third, the Tigers tied the game at 2-2 and scored twice more in the fifth inning to grab their first lead of the game, 4-2.

Roanoke fought back in the top of the sixth to keep the game interesting.  With one out, Ben Amos was hit by a pitch and advanced to third thanks to a double by Manthe.  Wallman grounded out to short but Amos scored and Manthe went to third.  Alex Stepp ended the threat with a strikeout which left the tying run on base and the score, 4-3.

Hampden-Sydney scored two runs in each of the next two innings to pull away and earn their 10th win and salvage the split.

Lipes led RC with a single, an RBI-triple and a run.  Michael Haslam went four innings on the mound for the Maroons, scattering nine hits and allowed two runs.  Tyler Grouten (1-2) took the loss for Roanoke.

The men return to action on Tuesday, April 10 as they travel to Greensboro, NC to play Guilford in a big conference contest.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
