Maroons Win Big in Double-Header over Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College baseball team earned two big wins over the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon, winning 21-4 and 6-2.  The Maroons now have a record of 4-4, while the Owls hold a record of 1-7.
 
Maine-Presque Isle jumped on the board first in the top of the second as Justin Berge singled to right field, scoring Tanner Marsh who had reached on an error.  The Maroons quickly responded in the bottom of the inning.
 
The bottom of the third is when the bats really got hot for the Maroons.  As the second batter of the inning, Jacob Clifton hit a huge two run bomb, to give Roanoke a 2-1 lead.  With one out, five consecutive batters reached base, followed by a grand slam by Mark Manthe, putting the Maroons ahead of the Owls  10-1.  After the second out of the inning, four more Maroons reached base, allowing Clifton and Cassady and Over the course of the third inning, the Maroons scored 10 runs off of nine hits to leave the bottom of the third with a 15-1 lead.
 
The Owls looked to make a comeback in the top of the fifth inning as Cam Morrell hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Josiah Brazi from third.  The next batter, Shane Smith, doubled to left field scoring Stephen Thor.  After the top of the fifth Roanoke still led 15-3.  In the bottom of the same inning,  Nick Sburlati came up as the second batter and hit a two run blast over the wall, extending Roanoke's lead to 17-3.  Later in the same inning, Gavin Pelletteri hit a two RBI single to left field, scoring Creel and Caylen Baire on the play.  The Maroons scored two more runs before the end of the inning to give Roanoke a 21-3 lead.  Maine-Presque Isle scored one more run in the bottom of the inning, but the Maroons walked away with a 21-4 win in the first game of the double header.   
 
Jacob Clifton led the Maroons in hits for the first game, going 3-3 with three runs and two RBIs.  Five different Maroons had two hits on the afternoon.  Nick Sburlati scored three runs during the day, and Mark Manthe had a team high four RBIs off of his grand slam in the third inning.  Cameron Holsouser picked up the victory, pitching five innings, giving up three runs off five hits and striking out six batters.
 
The Maroons were still hot in the second game, as they put up one run quickly in the first inning.  Boonewell Hagy hit a single to right field, scoring Brian Kluge who reached base on an error.  After the first inning, Roanoke led 1-0.  The Owls responded in the second inning as leadoff batter, Ted Walker, hit a solo home run to start the inning, tying the game at 1-1.
 
The Maroons found the groove again in the bottom of the second, as the first three batters reached base, allowing Burton to single to left field, scoring both Cam Cassady and Clifton.  Kluge followed things up with an RBI single of his own.   Two batters later, Hagy hit a double that scored two more runs, bringing the Maroons run total to five for the second inning, and a 6-1 lead.
 
Maine-Presque Isle scored one more run in the top of the third, but that would be the final run of the game as Roanoke won the second contest, 6-2.
 
Jacob Clifton led the Maroons in hits again in the second game, going 3-3 and scoring one run.  Aaron Burton went 1-2 in the game, posting two RBIs.  Boonewell Hagy had a 2-3 game with a team-high three RBIs.  Tyler Grouten picked up the victory in the game, pitching five innings, and giving up two runs off five hits.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 27th as the Maroons travel to face Averett University.  That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
