Maroons Fall in Non-Conference Game To Averett on Wednesday
DANVILLE – The Roanoke College baseball team fell in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon to Averett University, 7-3.  The Maroons now have a record of 4-5, while the Cougars now sit with a record of 11-3.

The Maroons opened up the top of the first inning, putting the first runs on the board.  Brian Kluge opened up the inning with a single up the middle.  That at-bat was followed by an RBI double from Bradley Mattox, plating Kluge all the way from first.  Mattox was then able to work his way home on a wild pitch, giving the Maroons a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

The Maroons put up one more run in the top of the third inning.  Gavin Pellitteri reached base on a throwing error.  He worked his way around to third base on an error and a Mattox bunt.  Boonewell Hagy hit an RBI sacrifice fly ball to left field, scoring Pellitteri putting Roanoke ahead 3-0 after the top of the third.

Averett started to come back in the bottom of the same frame, as Jimbo Newcomb hit a 2 RBI double to left field, bringing the Cougars within one, 3-2 after the third inning.  Newcomb had another RBI base hit in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.  Averett would go on to score two runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to win the non-conference matchup, 7-3 over the Maroons.

Bradley Mattox led the Maroons in hits, going 2-4 on the afternoon.  Brian Kluge and Jacob Clifton had one hit each.  Mattox and Boonewell Hagy finished the contest with one RBI each.

Andrew Kirks, Jimbo Newcomb, Zach Boraski and Jeffrey Younkins had two hits each for the Cougars, while Newcomb had three RBIs.  Tyler Long picked up the win, pitching three innings, giving up one hit and striking out one.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, February 28th as they host Ferrum College at Kiwanis Field.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start.
