Baseball Falls in Late Game to Averett on Tuesday Night
SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday evening to Averett University, 8-2.  The Maroons now have a record of 5-10, while the Cougars are sitting with a record of 17-6.

The Cougars scored first, as Jimbo Newcomb scored while Jordan Kidd stole second.  After the top of the third inning, Averett held a 1-0 lead.  In the fifth inning, Averett extended its lead to 2-0 after Jordan Kidd hit an RBI single, plating Chatham Currie.

The Maroons closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Boonewell Hagy hit an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Jacob Clifton from third.  The Maroons hit a pair of singles to load the bases, with Cam Cassady hitting an RBI single to bring home Mark Manthe, in a play that ended the inning.  After six, Roanoke tied the contest at 2-2.  Averett's Andrew Kirks hit a double that brought Kidd home, to quickly reclaim the lead, 3-2.  The Cougars scored four more runs between the eighth and ninth innings, including a 3 RBI home run from Kevin Alvarez.  The Maroons were unable to close the gap again, as Averett defeated Roanoke 8-2.

Brian Kluge, Mark Manthe and Cam Cassady each finished with two hits for the Maroons, while Manthe and Jacob Clifton picked up Ronaoke's only runs.  Cassady and Boonewell Hagy finished with one RBI each.  Chad Hill (0-1) was tabbed with the loss, after giving up two runs in three innings of work and striking out five.

Averett's Jordan Kidd led the team in hitting, going 3-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.  Kevin Alvarez finished the game with three RBIs and one run scored, stemming from his home run.  Travis Coates picked up the victory for the Cougars, pitching one-third of an inning.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 13th as they face off against ODAC opponent Emory & Henry.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM first pitch.
