Roanoke Baseball Takes Two Off of Randolph-Macon on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College baseball team took two games over Randolph-Macon on Saturday, winning 6-0 and 8-2 in ODAC action.  The Maroons now have a record of 11-15; 4-7 in ODAC, while the Yellow Jackets are 10-11; 5-6 in ODAC play.
 
The Maroons blanked the Yellow Jackets in game number one.  Roanoke scored six runs over the course of four different innings.  The first run crossed the plate in the bottom of the third, as Cam Cassady reached on an error, allowing Aaron Burton to score.  In the bottom of the fifth, Brian Kluge hit an RBI single to right field, plating Boonewell Hagy, taking a 2-0 lead.  In the next inning, Hagy grounded out, but allowed Mark Manthe to score.  Aaron burton also hit an RBI single, plating Clark Crutchfiel.  The Maroons final two runs in the game came from the bottom of the seventh, when Bradley Mattox hit a two run homer, scoring Cassady as well.
 
Reece Kingery led the Maroons in batting in the first game, going 3-3.  Burton, Crutchfield and Manthe had two hits each, as well as scoring one run.  Six different Maroons scored in the contest, and Mattox led the team with two RBIs.  Cameron Holshouser (3-4) picked up the victory, pitching six inning, giving up zero runs and striking out six.  Austin Gregory was tabbed with a save (1), giving up one hit and striking out five.
 
Of the three hits that the Yellow Jackets had in the first game, Jake Fletcher had two of them.  The other hit for Randolph-Macon came from Tim Benjamin.  Michael Helbig (3-4) earned the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits, striking out three as well.
 
Mark Manthe got the ball rolling for the Maroons in the bottom of the first as he grounded out, allowing Kluge to score.  Two innings later, Manthe hit a solo home run, giving Roanoke a 2-0 lead. 
 
The Yellow Jackets put their first run of the day up on the board in the top of the fifth, as Nate Meiners hit an RBI single, scoring Travis Lodge.  The bottom of that inning was a big one for the Maroons as Cassady, Manthe, Crutchfield and Jacob Clifton each had RBI base hits, giving Roanoke a 6-1 lead after the fifth inning.
 
Mark Manthe picked up his fourth RBI in the bottom of the sixth after he hit a double, scoring Mattox.  The Yellow Jackets scored one more run in the game, in the top of the eighth, but that would be their last as Roanoke won the second game 8-2
 
Manthe led the Maroons in hitting in the second game, going 3-4, with four RBIs and two runs scored.  He was followed by Cassady and Clifton who had two hits each on the day.  Tyler Grouten (4-4) earned the win, pitching six innings, giving up one run and striking out four  Jacob McMillan was tabbed with the save, pitching three innings, giving up one run and striking out four.
 
Randolph-Macon was led in hitting by Mitchell Keeler, who went 2-3 on the day.  There were three other Yellow Jackets that had one hit each.  Travis Lodge and Austin Carpenter scored the two runs for Randolph-Macon in the game.  Jake Bram (0-2) picked up the loss, after pitching 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs off eight hits.
 
The Maroons return to action as they host Guilford College at Kiwanis Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
